It has become established practice for there to be written directions to a Jury from the Judge but it should not be assumed that this avoids the need for such directions to be specifically tailored to the case as it develops .
In this case a Jury had asked a question over the Appellants mental functioning and whilst the Court did its best to address the questions put its failure to tailor a specific part of the written directions to assist the Jury was such as to render the conviction unsafe .
